2008 Garden
Our preparation included:
1. Seed inventory
2. Planning, deciding what to plant and where.
3. Roto-till, loosening the soil.
4. Fertilizer, adding nutrients.
In order to have a successful garden, all of the above need to be accomplished. All of us took turns on the rotor-tiller and threw fertilizer down. Dad made the planting plan on grid paper. Next we went to O’Tooles and bought the seeds that we didn’t already have. Once home, we grabbed the hand shovels and put the seeds in the ground. Throughout the growing season, we watered and weeded and waited for harvest. We hoed to loosen the soil and pull weeds. A couple of times during the summer, we put grass clippings down to retain moisture as well as slow down the weeds growing.

Results:
The dirt wasn’t at its highest quality this year despite the fertilizer. For that reason, the corn primarily and some other vegetables didn’t grow as full or lush. As we end this year, we plan on burning the old crops and adding the ash to the soil in hopes for a better harvest next year. –S.S.
